Spark Plugs
Subaru Spark Plug Care and Maintenance 101
The engine in your Subaru has begun misfiring, or worse, it's failed. You've ruled out a bad starter, alternator failure, and some other part of the engine being faulty. Now, you've figured out the real problem -- a defective spark plug.
Luckily, whether you're driving a car like Subaru Legacy, an SUV like Subaru Outback, or otherwise, replacing spark plugs is easy, though if you're not sure what to do, the pros at a Subaru service center can help.
After that, all you'll need to do to help the plugs last as long as they can is give them a good regular cleaning. There are five easy steps to that.
- Using a spark plug socket wrench, disconnect each plug from its lead.
- Clean off any dirt or debris around them (you can use a can of compressed air if you prefer).
- Use fine-grit sandpaper to wipe off each of their firing ends/electrodes.
- Scrub their threads with a wire brush.
- Replace the plugs.
You can also spray the plugs with brake cleaner if you want to; just wipe them off afterward.
